A very comfortable budget hostel in a superb historic building in the heart of York.
Micklegate House 88-90 Micklegate York YO1 6JX 01904 627 720
Situated in a beautiful Georgian townhouse within the medieval city walls, Safestay York is a typically excellent Safestay hostel. It occupies an historic building in a brilliant location, not far from the train station, and boasts a wide enough range of accommodation options to appeal to just about everyone.
First the building. Built in 1752, the townhouse boasts a variety of original features including a stone-flagged entrance hall, a very grand staircase, panelled rooms with Rococo ceilings and an amazing vaulted cellar. There are modern improvements and air conditioning throughout, with contemporary art on the walls amid Safestay's signature purple, and public spaces that include a smart dining room with long tables and benches, and a bar that serves drinks and snacks and has a pool table.
Much of the accommodation is in private rooms – twins and doubles – with en-suite facilities, but there are also a number of dormitories with anything from 4 to 12 bunks. In short it's perhaps the coolest place for budget city breaks in the heart of northern England's most historic city.
