Just 10 minutes’ walk from the train station and 15 minutes from the city's medieval walls, New Holgate is a cool, sophisticated boutique hotel occupying two Grade II-listed Victorian townhouses. Opened in 2023, the New Holgate has 12 guest rooms and shared spaces including a brick-walled dining room and a cosy, low-lit whisky lounge. It's all been carefully curated by Yorkshire-based interior designers, and while the style might have a touch of stateside city cool, there’s plenty that’s local too. There are nods to Holgate’s industrial heritage in the use of metalwork and creations by modern local artists on the walls. The food on the breakfast menu and drinks on offer in the evenings are locally sourced, and even the toiletries in the bathrooms are made not far from here.
There are no 'bedrooms' in New Holgate – it offers only suites, spread over all four floors of this townhouse hotel. Choose from double, king and luxury; each larger than the last. Even the doubles have a sofa that can convert into a bed, making every room family-sized if you want it to be. Having said that, none feel too large to be enjoyed by a couple, not even the super-sized luxury suite – although unusually, this has the capacity to sleep up to six, thanks to a separate living room with an extra sofa bed. Some of the suites – on the ground floor – are dog-friendly, and one has access to its own private garden.
All this space extends further outside, where, in the summer, guests can enjoy a contemporary patio. There’s also ample parking, with a space for every suite. The location, outside the city walls but a short stroll from York's historic centre, is ideal for anyone who’s visiting by car. But the proximity to the station makes it good for vehicle-free visits too. From here, you can walk to see all of central York’s sights: its castle, Minster, museums, medieval walls, and The Shambles.
