The YHA snagged an absolute beauty in Grinton Lodge, a 200-year-old former gentleman's shooting lodge standing high above Swaledale. The views from most of the rooms are breathtaking – right across the heather-clad moors and down the dale – while the building has retained much of its rather grand period detail, including castellated walls and a set of antlers mounted in the lounge. Most of the rooms follow the usual hostel configuration, sleeping 2 to 8 people, and while showers and toilets aren't en-suite there are enough to go around at busy times. Some of the rooms and bathrooms are actually pretty nice – certainly better than you have any right to expect at these prices – and the self-catering kitchen, lounges and dining room have all been upgraded, and there's certainly no institutional feel at what is one of Yorkshire's best budget accommodation options. They also let you camp in the grounds, while in a bosky grove next to the mansion there is a series of wooden camping pods (sleeping up to 4) – you'll need to bring all your own gear to use these, but you can use the facilities inside the hostel too, including a full meals service. The nearest pub is a 15-minute walk downhill in the hamlet of Grinton; Richmond is ten miles away, or there are wonderful off-road bike routes straight out of the door.
