Family-Friendly Hotel

Hotels don’t get much more family friendly than the Sands Resort Hotel on the north Cornish coast. It’s not exclusively for people with kids but the swimming pools, children’s playground, bouncy castle and babysitting services make it a real hit with parents – and outside of school holidays, it’s just as good for grown ups. After all, who wouldn’t love the sea views and enviable location? It’s a five-minute walk from the sands of Newquay’s Porth Beach and a half-hour hike from the surf of Watergate Bay. Plus it's extremely dog-friendly!

The impressive list of facilities at the Sands Resort sound as if they belong to a huge enterprise but in fact this place has a total of just 70 rooms. Many of them are two-bedroom suites which work perfectly for family stays, but all types of guests can be accommodated from solo travellers to guests with dogs. Rooms are all en-suite and have the standard inclusions which make for a comfortable stay (hairdryer, tea- and coffee-making facilities, TV) but, apart from the flexible room configurations, it’s what’s outside your room that really makes this place special. For starters there’s the view.

The hotel sits on the cliff top with the Atlantic in one direction and the garden and Cornish countryside in the other. Step outside and you can soon be in either. There’s that five-minute walk to swim at Porth with Newquay, its other beaches, aquarium and zoo, just beyond, less than a 10-minute drive away. And then there are all the other beaches of the North Cornish coast. There’s also swimming closer by with both an indoor and seasonal outdoor pool here at the hotel, plus tennis, basketball, football and miniature golf, as well as an arts & crafts club, enchanted maze and soft play, with everything from board games to bodyboards to borrow. It’s fair to say that you’re unlikely to run out of things to do.

It’s not all about the kids, though, and adults can get a bit of ‘me time’ in the hotel spa where there’s a steam room and treatments on offer. You’ll also have the opportunity for a child-free meal if you want one by booking the hotel’s listening service and a later dinner in The Beachcomber Restaurant & Bar. It is, of course, also a great place to feed the kids with dinners starting from 5.30pm. As we said, hotels don’t get much more family friendly than this.

Lovely relaxing break

We’ve just come back from a night at the Sands Resort and wished we'd stayed longer. We had a sea view superior room which had a very nice lounge area for relaxing before getting into the very large bed. Breakfast and evening meal was very nice. All the staff we encountered at reception and dining areas were very friendly and helpful. Nice cliff walk just across the road from the hotel and about a 10-15 minute walk to the beach. Would definitely like to stay here again.

Perfect family break

Spent a long weekend at Sands with my wife, 3-year-old daughter and spaniel. Our Country View Suite with balcony was the perfect size for us all and the facilities on site for smaller children (soft play, swimming pool, maze and play park) were excellent. The staff were all incredibly friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We ate in the restaurant twice and both times the food was delicious. Our spaniel was equally well cared for with towels at the door to dry his feet and biscuits in the bar. Would highly recommend for families and will stay again
