Sometimes, nothing else but a pub will do, and if you're looking to stay in central west London then you're in luck, because Aragon House does everything a boutique city inn should do – an attractive Grade II Georgian building offering generously proportioned and stylish rooms with comfortable beds, excellent food and drink, a pretty sheltered garden, a snazzy subterranean cocktail bar called the Green Room, and most important of all, a friendly, welcoming vibe. If you're looking to stay in the Fulham/Parsons Green area, it's hard to do better.
They have 15 individually designed hotel-quality bedrooms and offer all the amenities you might need, including mini Smeg fridges, Nespresso coffee machines, air-conditioning and en-suites with ‘Bramley’ toiletries. There's good wifi, flatscreen Smart TVs and Roberts Radios, complimentary still and sparkling water, and you can even bring your pet – the property is dog-friendly throughout. Rooms vary in size from 'Cosy' (larger than you'd expect) through 'Comfy' and up to 'Deluxe', but there's not a huge variation in price. The main differences are space and the fact the Deluxe rooms – Grandison and Beaumont – have super-king-size beds, easy chairs and a separate bath and walk-in shower. They also have one accessible room with space for a wheelchair, and some Comfy rooms have the option to add a single bed.
The rooms are extremely good value by London standards and you may want to spend time making the most of it, but there's also a convivial bar and restaurant to tempt you downstairs, with an array of eclectic artwork adorning the walls. Food-wise, it's upscale and rather vogueish gastropub fare – dishes like Serrano ham with mozzarella, roasted peach, balsamic glaze and toasted almonds; rib of beef with Koffmann's chips and fresh watercress; and spinach and ricotta tortelloni, with peas, broad beans, spinach and white wine cream sauce feature on the seasonal menu. They do a mean line in cocktails too, including 'English Garden' (Plymouth gin with elderflower, apple and lime juice and cucumber) and chilli mango margarita.
Aragon House is also well-equipped for weddings, parties and corporate events – the Richardson Room holds up to 60 seated and 80 standing and comes complete with a private bar and toilet, cloakroom, lift access and a sound system. Meanwhile, their picturesque and spacious walled garden holds up to 150. Home to booths and sofas, with blankets, heaters and hot water bottles provided come winter, it's the ideal spot for small and big gatherings.
And of course, you're well placed to see more or less everywhere in London, with idyllic Parson's Green directly opposite, Kings Road on your doorstep and the tube station just a two-minute walk away.
