This ultra-stylish boutique hotel occupies a prime position between Alnwick Castle and the town’s Bailiffgate Museum. Stay here and you're in capable hands. The Cookie Jar’s quirky name is a nod to the experienced hotelier behind the business, Debbie Cook, who has put together a hotel that lives up to the family reputation for great places to stay (her husband was formerly Chief Exec at Hotel Malmaison/Hotel du Vin) and the property shares a sense of design-led luxury but offers something altogether more personal. You’ll feel it as soon as you step inside to be greeted by warm smiles and the hotel’s signature treat – a jar of homemade cookies.
There are just 11 guest rooms in this converted former convent, a Grade-II listed building that's been thoroughly softened from its more austere previous incarnation while retaining a lot of character. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the flagship room – The Chapel – a spacious suite complete with stained glass windows, beneath which you can bathe in a freestanding copper bath. Other guest rooms vary in size and price but each is individually designed and decorated. What ties them together is the quality of furniture and amenities– Hypnos beds, en-suites with drench showers, Penhaligon’s toiletries and locally-roasted coffee.
You may also notice there’s a common colour throughout: blue is extensively used, but it’s so cleverly done that it’s never too much. It’s calming and warming thanks to different textures and shades, with complementary wood, leather and lights. You’ll notice it everywhere from the walls in your bedroom to the upholstered chairs in the 30-seater Bistro downstairs. This, with its seasonal menu and 'aficionado' wine list (alongside a regular one), is a destination in its own right for dinners and afternoon teas. Breakfasts are served here too, and there’s also a terrace overlooking the garden if you want to simply sit with a drink, and a lovely book-lined residents’ lounge at the front of the building.
Alnwick Castle, seat of the Duke of Northumberland and the backdrop for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts, is just outside, so you don’t need to travel to sightsee. For more inspiration, just look at the names of the guest rooms: all Cook family favourites in the North East that make up a tick-list of places to visit. There’s Harehope for shooting, Goswick for golf, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and the castles of Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh. Thoroughly recommended!

Wonderful experience
From the moment we arrived at The Cookie Jar, we were made to feel so welcome. It’s not very often that you feel that you’re almost staying with friends. All of the staff were so helpful, suggesting places to visit along the coast and recommending places to eat. Our dog Marley was also spoilt as well. The breakfast was superb as were the evening meals we had. Thanks very much to Debbie and all the team who made our stay so wonderful. We look forward to coming back soon!!

What a wonderful hotel
We stayed here on the last night of our "Scottish" holiday on the way home and it was the best night of the whole trip. We had a large comfortable room with a large bathroom in a fascinating old building with really friendly staff. We had a delicious meal and an excellent breakfast and greatly wished we could have stayed longer. We would love to go back and would highly recommend this hotel and this lovely town.

The Chapel Room for the win!
We took a last minute trip for a surprise getaway for me and my wife. We took a bit of a chance on The Cookie Jar and the most expensive room. The Chapel. Absolutely blown away. I've stayed all around the world in some of the best hotels but this could very well be the best yet. Its running our volcano view hot tub room in Santorini close. We didn't want to leave the room. They almost had to get us legally evicted it was so good. Comfortable and beautiful furnishings. Exceptional design that utilises the history of the building. Subtle and indulgent. The shower next to the free standing bath. Waking up to the beautiful stained glass windows. Finally dragging ourselves away to enjoy the incredible breakfast then finding out when we left the hotel that it was yards away from Alnwick Castle (we had arrived in pitch black night). I feel like words aren't doing this place justice. Bravo to the owners and the amazing team and hotel they've put together. An absolute jem of a find and not a volcano in sight.

Flying visit that we wish was longer
Wonderful location. Warm welcome. Immaculate hotel with beautiful style. We booked one night but will stay longer next time to enjoy this beautiful location and hotel. Every staff member was genuinely friendly and helpful. We didn’t have dinner but will definitely eat there next time if the quality of the breakfast is an indication of how delicious the supper would be. The gardens at the rear are stunning and the history of the building is fascinating. Highly recommended 100% - thank you!

Highly recommend
We loved the Cookie Jar. Genuinely warm hospitality. Great food: we ate breakfast and dinner and both were excellent. High-quality ingredients, very nicely cooked. The hotel is located right by an entrance to the castle and two minutes from the centre of town.

Excellent boutique hotel
A beautiful small hotel, decor and design are drawer. Wonderful staff, everything done with care and attention. The hotel boasts a super small lounge area for pre- and post-meal drinks, and a sophisticated dining room.
Menu is a clever mix of seasonal fare, and accompanied by a well-thought-out wine list.

A luxurious home from home
Having spent ages trawling the internet for the best place to stay, we came to the Cookie Jar to celebrate a 60th birthday and 29th wedding anniversary. It was worth all the effort to find such a warm, friendly and welcoming hotel. Right by Alnwick Castle, minutes from the town and under a 30-minute drive to Seahouses, Bamburgh and Lindisfarne, it was the perfect place to stay. The room was beautiful and the cookies, topped up each day, were a delicious treat. The whole ambiance of the rooms, lounge, dining room and garden were relaxing and enabled us to feel completely at home. The food was delicious - don’t ignore the, what looks like standard pain au chocolat, at breakfast - but instead is filled with a light jam and custard - they are wonderful. The staff are so lovely, helpful and welcoming. They do the owners proud. What I loved was how some of the younger staff had all worked there previously and had come back after university because they said how good it is to work at the Cookie Jar. High praise for those who manage and run the hotel. We would definitely come back again if we are ever this way. Everyone went out of their way to make our special few days even more special. Thank you for all your attention to detail, not only in the hotel itself, but to everyone who walks through the door.

Hidden Gem
We have found a great hotel in a lovely town. Warm welcoming staff, beautiful big room which was spotlessly clean. Super nights sleep in a comfy bed. Furnishing is of a high quality and the dinner and breakfast was excellent. Our stay was faultless! We will be back and will highly recommend to others.
