You’ll find this unique bed and breakfast behind the high street facade of a former bank in Dalbeattie in South West Scotland. Rescued and renovated from years of neglect, it’s a colourful and creative place to stay with an artistic and innovative host to match. That’s Mandy, the welcoming owner of The Art Bank. For most of the year she offers bed and breakfast in the three guest rooms here, but on selected dates she also offers 'retreats' – fully-catered events aimed at anyone who wants to explore their creative side and benefit from her experience as both artist and life coach.

As a B&B, Art Bank is certainly different. No fusty old florals here and no modern neutrals either. Each of the three guest rooms has been decorated with bold colours and prints to honour a well-known artist. Choose from the Picasso Room (a family room with access to a shared bathroom), the Monet Room (a double with a shared bathroom) and the Van Gogh Room (a double with an ensuite). Each is a creative cocoon that’s as comfortable as it is inspiring. All are dog-friendly, and in addition to the flair in their design, they're also practical and well-equipped, with comfy beds, a TV, a desk and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

Views from the windows are out across Dalbeattie’s rooftops, and from some aspects beyond to the surrounding hills and mountains. This is a good place to base yourself if you want to discover this area of Dumfries and Galloway. It’s in the centre of town and all its amenities are within walking distance and other highlights are a short drive away. The Dalbeattie Forest Town Wood is less than a mile south, offering tracks and trails for walking and mountain biking through the trees to Plantain Loch. It’s only a couple of miles beyond here that you hit the shoreline of an area known as the 'Scottish Riviera' or Solway Coast, where you can visit the village of Kippford or Sandyhills Beach. Inland, there’s Threave Garden, home to horticulturists and a haven for wildlife on the outskirts of the foodie town of Castle Douglas. Whether you want a base in South West Scotland or are looking for a creative retreat, there’s plenty of inspiration both within and outside Dalbeattie's Art Bank.

Facilities

The property was built in 1863 and owned by a local Draper named Samual Brown. It remained in his family until it was purchased by The Clydesdale Bank Ltd. in 1940. It was a bank until 1991, and a central part of the local community. Since then it has had 2 private owners, but over the last 2 years, it has been left to crumble, unloved.
It now has an owner who loves it and is going to reclaim its place as a central part of the local community by creating hospitality accommodation and local jobs.

Imagine yourself in one of the three themed luxury bedrooms.

The Owner Says

Built in 1863, this ex-Clydesdale bank has been recently renovated to a high standard. The 3 bedrooms are themed on famous artists, Picasso, Van Gogh and Monet, making them colourful and interesting. The Van Gogh room is all about the contrasts between his 'Sunflowers' and 'Starry Night' with a nod to his own bedroom in Arles, it has a street and mountain view (with a few rooftops thrown in) and private bathroom. The Picasso room has dual aspect views with a rather special arched window that you can sit in. This room is bright, more masculine in design like the cubist movement and contains some rather special details painted by your host. The Monet room is a place of calm, water lilies, pastel colours and self care. You will lose yourself in the opulence of the colours and furnishings and admire the view whilst chilling in 'cosy corner'. The Picasso and Monet rooms are on the 2nd floor (make sure you are OK with stairs) and share a luxury bathroom with a roll top freestanding bath and stunning views of the mountains that 'hug' Dalbeattie. The dining room is a tranquil paradise of blues and greens so that your breakfast can be savoured in a environment of peace.
Mandy is a Creative Genius Consultant, Artist and Author who helps creative women to build their businesses. She hosts creative retreats 8 times a year in the property and offers B&B outside of these. I love meeting the amazing people who enjoy the west coast Scotland, and who want something a little different and a bit special. The Art Bank was created for people who love creativity, art, crafting and colour. There are so many places that are afraid to inject their personality into their decor, not mine! I have chosen three of my favourite artists and themed the rooms around their art, personalities and styles (even adding a little mural to every room myself). I have worked in hospitality, retail & the online space of almost 3 decades now so I know what you want when you book a holiday or short break, comfort, a touch of luxury an outstanding breakfast to fuel your day and a joyous host. I have made it my mission to provide all of the above and more and I know that you will love staying at The Art Bank and that you will tell all your friends about us.
