It's not often you get to stay somewhere that's straight out of the imagination of its owner, but that's absolutely the case at Piggles Retreat, where John Peters has created a peaceful escape in the quiet Cambridgeshire countryside, just a few miles from both Cambridge and Newmarket, but as bucolic a country idyll as you could wish for!

A collection of log cabins in the woods, huddled around a small lake on the edge of the Cambridgeshire village of Brinkley, Piggles Retreat was created by bringing one of John's and his late wife's beloved anniversary cards to life. Situated in a very quiet location, set back from the main road, its three cabins were made by hand by a good friend, and he's connected them with walkways and paths that wind through the trees, curve up to viewing or dining platforms and down to the banks of a small lake, where you can jump into your own boat for a spin on the water whenever you fancy. It's great for families looking for an affordable, outdoorsy self-catering place to stay that's not in the middle of nowhere. But equally, it's an ideal retreat for couples looking for a few days to reconnect with nature.

Each of the cabins comes with a double bed, seating area and a kitchenette with a mini fridge, so you can self-cater, but there's a pub in the village if you choose not to. There's a TV for rainy days, and each cabin has an outdoor deck and barbecue, and a dedicated private bathroom a few steps away, equipped with shower, sink and toilet. It's a bit like staying in an outdoor hotel, except for the fact there's deliberately no WiFi – making it much more of a place to switch off completely from the outside world. All of the cabins sleep two people, but they can also comfortably accommodate a young family of four –two (Lion's House and Beaver's House) are the same size, while Bear's House is slightly larger. There's also a low-cost overflow cabin with bunk beds – Monkey's House – which is perfect for kids and young families if you need more space.

It's a good location too – a handy and affordable base for Cambridge, just over 10 miles away, and Newmarket, about six miles. As for attractions, there are plenty to choose from – Linton Zoo, the Duxford branch of the Imperial War Museum, the gardens and interiors of historic Anglesey Abbey are all within easy driving distance, and there are also numerous footpaths and cycle routes which you can pick up in the village itself. Or why not just while away the time outside your cabin or by the lake, maybe taking a boat out on the water or enjoying a round or two on John's brand-new putting green – Piggles Retreat is ideal if you have no particular place to go!
