Aikwood Tower

UK Scotland South Scotland Scottish Borders Selkirk

01750 700 500   Selkirk, Borders TD7 5HJ

  • Sleeps 10
  • Quirky & Unique
A spectacular historic self-catering castle bolthole in the heart of the Scottish Borders.

Just forty miles south of Edinburgh, this Scottish Borders bolt-hole is a stunning place to stay – a sixteenth-century fortified tower sited on a hill amidst some spectacular scenery. It has historic charm in abundance, and bags of character, though you also get all the bells and whistles as far as a luxurious stay is concerned. Five large and very comfortable bedrooms, classy en-suite bathrooms (some with stand-alone baths), a fully-fitted kitchen with an Aga, and a large bespoke oak dining table ('Aikwood' means oak) mean plenty of space for large groups, family parties and gatherings. Evenings can be spent around the log fire in the glorious main hall, maybe a game of table tennis in the lower hall, or quiet time in the old library and study. There is always someone around if you need them, with outside caterers available if you don't fancy cooking (there is a second kitchen on site), not to mention yoga practitioners and masseurs.

The tower was formerly the home of the Liberal politician Lord Steel, who restored it in the 1990s and won a number of architectural awards. Now under the stewardship of his son Rory, it is the perfect place from which to explore the gorgeous Borders countryside (though you're going to need a car to do it). There’s plenty to keep you occupied nearby, from walking in the Ettrick Valley and Forest to shopping in the local market town of Selkirk. Just half an hour away Glentress forest park (0300 067 6900) is known for its superb mountain biking trails. Those with a head for heights can also take to the Go Ape (01603 895 500) tree top course.

The Owner Says

Aikwood Tower really is your very own Castle for the duration of your stay and is without a doubt, some of the best luxury accommodation in the Scottish Borders - there's no better place to revive your batteries and relax with family and friends.

Almost 500 years old, our striking Grade A-listed tower house is full of authentic medieval castle charm - from the spiral staircase that winds its way through the heart of the building to the enormous crackling fire in the Great Hall. It has now been lovingly restored and renovated into five-star boutique accommodation without compromising on the integrity of the original building. With five en-suite bedrooms (comfortably sleeping eleven guests) and four reception rooms there's ample room for relaxing and socialising!
