Lochleven Castle
Loch Leven KY138UF
Dreamily romantic island castle in Central Scotland that is only accessible by boat. Easily one of the UK's most beguiling historic attractions, the trip back through time starts when you board the little ferry that putters across to the island that houses this dramatic ruin. It is a rugged ruin that swirls in intrigue and history, said to be the site where William Wallace helped slay an English garrison and where Mary Queen of Scots sadly miscarried twins. Information boards tell some of its more colourful stories, but you can also just let your imagination run wild rambling around the ruins. A wee trail also circuits the small island, with plenty of opportunity to view the birdlife that Loch Leven is so renowned for. A cafe/restaurant awaits by the ticket office back on the mainland.
