Fort William Highland 0845 601 5929
Quite simply one of great railway journeys of the world, the West Highland Line, from Glasgow to Fort William, and the accompanying West Highland Line Extension from Fort William to Mallaig takes in an epic sweep of scenery. After shaking off the Clyde shipyards, the route climbs steadily into a world of majestic mountains, tumbling burns and barren moorland as it searches out the Atlantic and its white beaches in Lochaber. Scotrail trains run scheduled services year-round, while in summer the Jacobite Steam Train runs steam hauled services between Fort William and Mallaig that include a trip across the ‘Harry Potter Viaduct’ at Glenfinnan.
There is a wonderful sleeper journey on this line - you can book a 2-bed berth from London Euston all the way to Fort William non-stop, starting in Euston in the evening and then waking up in the highlands early morning; make sure you get up before Glencoe and make your way to the windows though, as the scenery is spectacular. If you're coming up to Scotland from the south, it's a great way to arrive.
