A stylish and very comfortable B&B in the centre of Oban, with stunning views.
1 Dalriach Road Oban Argyll PA34 5EQ 01631 358 653
Not all B&Bs are created equal, a fact you are quickly reminded of when you arrive at this beautifully situated grand old house on a hill above the bay in Oban. The warmness of the welcome and spaciousness of the rooms are only exceeded by the stunning nature of the views – right across to Mull and the smaller isle of Kerrera. Run with style and panache by well-travelled former architects Suzanne and Mark McPhillips, this former cottage hospital is about as comfortable as could be, with a great location right in the centre of town and just a short walk from the waterfront.
It's their second B&B venture, and there's a stylishness to the rooms that perhaps you don't expect in a building of this nature, with contemporary furniture, soft, muted tones and modern art, along with flatscreen TVs and DVD players, wi-fi, high-quality bed linen, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and (a nice thought) glasses and a corkscrew so you can enjoy a glass of wine while getting used to those views. There's a sitting room and library downstairs, and Suzanne and Mark cook up a fabulous breakfast in their turreted dining room every morning – not only a superb cooked Full Scottish, and good quality smoked salmon, but also delicious and unusual alternatives like kedgeree, a frittata or a cheese platter.
As for Oban, it's a busy town with plenty to draw you, from the bizarre colosseum of McCaig's Tower to some of the best fish and seafood restaurants on the west coast – though for most people it's the main jumping-off point for ferries to the various islands of the Hebrides.
