St Hilda B&B Afloat

We say

Could this be the west coast's most unusual B&B? Based in the tranquil waters of Tobermory Bay, on the isle of Mull, the St Hilda offers perhaps the best way to see the islands and inlets of this beautiful region. But if you're yet to get your sea legs, or you just want to explore Mull, then this makes a perfect and unique base, a beautiful, wooden tall ship that is one of the smallest ever to compete in a Tall Ships race. There are two cabins, a spacious double with an en-suite bathroom in the aft cabin and four berths in the comfy fore cabin, with an adjacent toilet and shower. There's nothing like being rocked gently to sleep by the waters of the bay or waking up to the sound of water lapping against the hull. As well as B&B, they offer packed lunch at £15 per person and dinner for £40 per person, including an aperitif and wine. In April, September and October, the boat is berthed at the marina in Holy Loch, Dunoon, and they also offer B&B there if you prefer that as a location.

The whole thing is a bit of an adventure: they pick you up in the yacht's tender from the bustling quayside of the island capital of Tobermory, whose famously bright-coloured buildings line the waterfront against a backdrop of high woodland hills. The town's bay holds the wreck of a supposedly treasure-filled Spanish galleon. Mull and the islands and seas around are chock-full of wildlife, from golden and sea eagles and many other species of birds, and even the occasional minke whale. Mull is also home to the magnificent Stevenson Way, and a host of satellite islands, including tiny Iona just a mile away, whose abbey has been an important place of pilgrimage for centuries. In short we couldn't think of a better or more unique place from which to explore this beautiful and fascinating corner of Scotland. And if you climb aboard for one of their cruises you can see even more of the Inner and Outer Hebrides.
