The Inn at West End

We say

We reckon the best starting-point for a hotel or restaurant is to create the sort of place you'd like to visit yourself, and the Inn at West End, just outside Woking deep in the heart of suburban Surrey, is living proof that this approach works – serving excellent Modern British food to hungry punters in a stripped-down, relaxed environment that is as crisp and welcoming as its owners, Gerry and Ann Price. They have recently added 12 thoughtfully furnished boutique rooms in a purpose-built wing behind the main building to complete their contemporary restaurant-with-rooms offering, and are amiable, enthusiastic owners who know what their customers want. The rooms are spacious and well equipped, with Hypnos mattresses and high quality linens, flatscreen TVs and free high-speed wifi along with en-suite wet rooms stuffed full of posh toiletries. They're a dog-friendly place to stay too, with two rooms available for dogs (and their owners!), who are also welcome in the main bar. The food is great –  locally supplied, with game from the Windsor Royal Parks and lots of veg from local allotments, and like all our favourite restaurants has a menu that varies from traditional British favourites to more inventive, high-end dishes that change with the seasons. They also double as a wine merchant, and have a predictably great wine list that includes some fabulous little-known Spanish and Portuguese options, some of which are exclusive to the restaurant – if you try something you like you can buy a bottle to take home; and likewise if you want to buy something in the wine shop you can drink it in the restaurant and only pay a corkage fee.  A nice idea, and typical of what is an ultra-hospitable, ultra-homely place to stay which also happens to serve some excellent food. And all this within a few miles of the M3 and Heathrow Airport – you need never stay in a faceless travel lodge again.
