A full-service hotel with spa and pool that is Newmarket's comfiest place to stay by some distance.
Bury Rd Newmarket Suffolk CB8 7BX 01638 663 175
Situated right in the heart of the town's internationally renowned thoroughbred industry, sandwiched between two of its most illustrious stables, the Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa is very much the place to stay in Newmarket – a large hotel that's just a short walk from the famous Gallops, where you can see any number of horses training every morning from first light. But that's not the only reason to stay here. The hotel has a fabulous range of amenities, including 24-hour room service, a spa, pool and excellent leisure facilities. Also, unusually for a hotel of this kind, it's not only privately owned but has received a decent amount of investment over recent years, with the result that it has a set of fully refurbished rooms and facilities, and confident standards of service that you often only see in independently owned hotels.
The hotel has grown piecemeal over the year from its original Georgian core, and most of its rooms are in a more recent back extension. There's a generosity to even the Standard King bedrooms that you don't find in chain hotels, with all boasting king-size beds, a/c, password-free wifi, Sky TV and tea- and coffee-making facilities with fresh milk, water and biscuits; the bathrooms have all been recently re-furbished and are well-appointed; and the Superior rooms have a separate bath and shower, Bose Bluetooth speakers and super-king-size beds. There are also six light and spacious suites in the original Georgian building, furnished with fruit bowls and welcome treats, juices and chocolates and his-and-her sinks.
There’s a nice bar that’s open all day and into the early hours of the morning, and a smallish restaurant – Squire’s – that does good job of balancing high-end dishes with more pedestrian favourites like fish-and-chips and a good range of steaks: basic main courses are good value, plus they do a good-value fixed-price menu; the a la carte menu is pricier but offers a more fine dining experience. In addition to the bar and restaurant, there are private dining and function rooms, the largest of which is perfect for weddings and banquets, and the hotel has a 15-metre pool, sauna and steam room, a good-sized gym, and a spa in a separate building, with a lounge offering food, a light-drenched hydrotherapy pool, rooftop hot tub and various treatment rooms (the spa is an additional cost whereas the pool and fitness club is included in the cost of your stay). Basically, whether you're here for the horse-racing or just want to poke around historic Newmarket and see a bit of Suffolk, the Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa is a very comfortable place to lay your head.
