If ever there was a spot that highlights Oxford’s two worlds, this has to be it. Step into the quadrangles, the refectory and the chapel, and you’re in a place of peace and reflection which is a vast contrast to the ordinary city street outside. Every schoolboy knows that for a place to be a ‘city’, it has to have a cathedral – the chapel of Christ Church college counts as Oxford’s cathedral. The college plays an important role in the life of English storytelling: it’s here that Alice, of Wonderland fame, became friends with Lewis Carroll, and Harry Potter fans may also recognise Hogwarts’ Great Hall.

In the Dining Hall look for the Alice in Wonderland window and the fireplaces with the long necks which inspired Lewis Carroll. Visit the Picture Gallery too where you'll find the only stained glass window with a toilet featured!
