For at least a hundred years, kids have been crabbing off Whitstable beach. Pick up a crab line from George’s or Sundae Sundae on the high street, attach a scrap of bacon or a whelk and you’re away. The best spots are on West Beach, where you can clamber out onto a groyne and dangle your line; at low tide it’s even easier – just dig in the muddy sand around the base of the groynes. After a decent catch you'll find kids wandering some meters up the beach to overturn their bulging buckets and watch the crabs racing each other back to water. Its a lovely way to keep the kids excited and while away the hours especially when the suns out… just watch they don't nip your fingers!
