Although this is easily reached by car from Freshwater Bay, the best way to become acquainted with the Red Lion is after an invigorating walk from Yarmouth along the Freshwater Way footpath. Alongside an old church and with its own leafy garden, the Red Lion is a perfect traditional pub, with fine ales and pine furniture, though it's particularly known for its food. At weekends it gets pretty packed and you may need to book to bag a table. The produce is mostly local, and is prepared using herbs from the pub garden: daily specials usually feature chicken dishes and plenty of fresh fish, including salmon, mussels and scallops – perfect after a hunger-inducing walk!
