Old Shoulder of Mutton

West Bank Winster Matlock Derbyshire DE4 2DQ 01629 650 005

We say

In 1753 the small village of Winster had 24 alehouses, inns and brewhouses, and one of them was the Shoulder of Mutton. The Shoulder sold refreshments to locals, travellers and hauliers as well as stabling 16 horses and incorporating a blacksmiths. Given the size of Winster, this was some tally. Every other house must have been a boozer! Fast forward a few centuries and if you're a weary traveller you'll still get sustenance and nourishment, but sadly no ale. Julie and Steven will give you a proper Derbyshire welcome and a terrific breakfast though, and a couple of days spent here will lift your spirits before you journey onward. Choose from three fabulous bedrooms, all with top quality linen and sumptuous textiles and one or two quirky additions collected by Julie – this is no bland, corporate make-over. One room has a frame on the wall containing clay pipes found during the renovation, and there are fresh flowers everywhere, including the charming drawing room on the first floor, with its open fire and lovely views over the village. At the back there's a stunning (and unexpected) garden with plenty of sitting-out space – why not enjoy your eggs Benedict or Derbyshire oatcakes with the hills as backdrop? Altogether a special spot, and very close to Chatsworth House, Haddon and Hardwick Halls.
