2 Lake Road Keswick CA12 5BT 01768 773 463
Simply a cracking pub – no two ways about it. It’s a dog-friendly, real-ale kind of place, with ancient wooden benches, roaring fires and a changing selection of beers, including some from the local Keswick Brewing Company. Bar meals here are really popular, and their proud boast is that nothing is fried – so no chips, but hearty dishes with lashings of potatoes, rice and fresh veg, including the house special goulash, which is filling enough to get you up Everest and back, never mind the lakeland fells.
Seriously, I could barely walk after finishing the goulash – this is champion tucker for hungry hikers. They actually do a smaller serving as well, so you might want to order that and save some room for the "Thirst Rescue" beer (the pub gives 5p to the local mountain rescue team for every pint sold) – you never know when you might need them.
