Tent-free camping in a historic barn - at least 250 years old - with great communal facilities, located in a picturesque country village on the North Downs Way
The Street, Puttenham, Guildford, Surrey, GU3 01483 422 774
Offering what must be the cheapest accommodation in Surrey, the YHA-affiliated Puttenham Eco Camping Barn has space for up to 11 people sleeping on broad benches, separated into three partitioned rooms - like camping without the canvass. The barn, which dates back to at least 1762, has a good shower and bathroom, and a fully equipped communal kitchen. Although the barn is located just off the road, the accommodation is very much intended for use by people arriving in non-motorised transport (there's nowhere to park - and it is an eco barn after all). It is popular with walkers doing sections of the North Downs Way and cyclists exploring the Sustran's National Cycle Network Route 22. There's a secure bike shed for locking up your bike, and a drying room room for soggy boots and hiking gear, both housed under the solar panels that provide much of the energy used by the barn. Puttenham is a picturesque village and, best of all, just down the road is the gorgeous Good Intent Pub, where you can enjoy some great real ale and an excellent feed if you don't fancy cooking. You can rock up on your own (in which case you might end up sharing your sleeping area) or book the entire barn if arriving with a group. Wardens arrive at the property at 5pm, when they open the doors and let guests in (although you do need to book in advance). It's possible to hire clean sleeping bags.
