We've come up with our top five favourite haunted haunts across the UK with nearby cool places to stay - perfect for family half term - or as an adult treat for anytime of the year.

1. Edinburgh Dungeon, Edinburgh

Prepare to be terrified by a cast list of the sinister and baleful real life characters who have blackened the city's dark heart over the centuries - there's even a drop ride that simulates your own hanging!

  • Edinburgh Youth Hostel - A perfect, low budget family room option, close to the city centre.
  • 94DR - A sharply designed boutique guesthouse with an energetic, youthful approach and very welcoming to kids.
  • The Scott Apartment - A stylish Georgian self-catering abode which sleeps six people, with three stylish bedrooms - very kid-friendly.

2. Chambercombe Manor

This latter-day farmhouse in Ilfracombe, still retains its Tudor architectural grandeur – and its ghosts. They say a body was walled up in a chamber and only discovered in 1865. Have a wonder around - or tag along one of their ghost tours.

  • Putsborough Manor Cottages - A beautiful self-catering cottage, both peaceful and rural but with the beach only a couple of minutes walk away.
  • Longlands - Kids will love staying in their very own safari tent - but these come furnished with vintage leather sofas, luxurious linen and a blanket box filled with family-friendly games.
  • Lundy House Hotel - A wonderful hotel/B&B with rooms overlooking the sea. It's both family and dog-friendly and incredibly laid back.

3. Tudor World & The Falstaff Experience

Shrieve’s House, Stratford-upon-Avon has been described by Horrible Histories author Terry Deary as the most haunted building in England. There are claims of a number of spirits that roam the property: an archer from Henry VIII's rein, an 18th century serial murderer, a little girl who was a pickpocket in the tavern, and a justice of the peace who used his power to run an extortion ring. Very spooky...

  • The Stratford Hotel - This rather basic hotel is handily just a ten-minute walk from the town centre and fantastic value for families.
  • Stratford Limes Hotel - Here you can have your very own stand-alone apartment - perfect for families or those staying a few nights.
  • The White Swan Hotel - This stunning 15th-century building really has the wow factor - and their bar offers fantastic grub with decent kids options covered.

4. The Doctor Who Experience

Daleks are scary all times of the year, but none more so than at Halloween. This year, head down to Cardiff (whilst dressed up as your favourite Doctor Who monster of course!) and experience a frightening time travel adventure...and a Dalek or two.

  • Old Post House - Right next to another fantastic attraction, National History Museum in St Fagans, the Old Post House does the job if you’re in search of something a little more restful than most of the other Cardiff options.
  • Sleeperz - Slap bang next to Cardiff Central station, this budget hotel offers breezy, light-filled rooms with flatscreen TVs, tea and coffee making facilities and free wifi - plus all important soundproofed rooms.
  • YHA Cardiff Central - This is one of the most recently renovated YHA hostels and it does a great job in providing affordable and comfortable lodgings right in the heart of Cardiff. Family rooms too.

5. The Treasurer's House

This was the first ever property bestowed to the National Trust, but the cellars are a scene of many a terrifying ghost story and where you can see the remains of the Roman road over which the house is built, plus the attics, once Edwardian servants quarters.

  • Hotel 53 - A smart, modern hotel in a great location, just a few minutes walk from the city centre, and a hop, skip and a jump from Clifford’s Tower and the Castle Museum.
  • The Bar Convent - A B&B in England's oldest living convent with a couple of larger family rooms, plus use of a sitting room, kitchen and top-floor recreation room with rooftop views – so it's a good self-catering base for couples and families.
  • Middlethorpe Hall - Ok, so this isn't entirely family-friendly, as they only accept kids over 6, but it does come with a spa, which is definitely a bonus in our eyes!
