If ever there was a place to feel that special magic of the forest, it is here in Cropton, a paradise of sunlit glades and shy woodland creatures. Situated on a wonderfully remote bit of Forestry Commission land, this really is the perfect getaway for families, couples and groups of friends – a series of cabins that blend delightfully into their woodland surroundings. Follow the forest road as it drops deep into the wooded valley on the edge of the North York Moors National Park; feel the calm of the forest wrap itself around you; and listen... silence.

Some cabins are hidden beneath the trees and others open out onto soft grassy glades, but they're all warm and welcoming and enjoy an idyllic woodland setting. This is also Dark Sky country, so on clear nights expect to be amazed by the number of stars you can see from your cabin porch. Cabins sleep between 2 and 6, and vary from the 'Golden Oak' cabins on stilts to 'Silver Birch' cabins. All are very comfortable, equipped with a TV, wifi (an optional extra), fluffy robes in the en-suite (only included as a standard in the Golden Oak cabins), an outdoor hot tub, and a log-burning stove (only in the Golden Oak cabins). You can even bring the dog if you book one of the specific pet-friendly cabins.

The Forest Retreat hub provides a café and bar, a shop and play area, bikes for hire, and wildlife-spotting and bushcraft activities with the Forest rangers; other activities include archery, falconry and pony trekking.
