Brandiers Farm

A rural idyll on the edge of the Cotswolds for couples or families, with lovely accommodation, wild swimming, tennis and more.
Just being able to stay at this beautiful rural property, on the borders of Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, feels like a privilege. With 35 acres of grounds, it's such a special place, the home of photographers Kim and Peter Lavery, who live in the main coach house and rent out not only a gorgeous two-bedroom converted barn but also a studio apartment next door, which can sleep 2–4 people. There are even a couple of glamping options in the garden, all contributing to what is a gloriously rustic rural retreat with its own grounds and gardens consisting of a walled garden, ponds, meadows, a lake and tennis court, even a lakeside bar.

First the Long Barn,  which is a lovely timber-clad building that can comfortably accommodate either two couples or a family –  or more if needed, with sofa beds and futons to spare. Downstairs is home to a huge kitchen and a cool, funky bedroom with an exotically tiled en-suite bathroom with a spacious walk-in shower. A spiral staircase leads up to another bathroom, this time with a rolltop bath tub, and a large beamed living room and second bedroom in one, with a king-size bed and sofa and glass doors leading onto a balcony overlooking the garden. It's a light, bright, almost minimalist property, with a relaxed elegance in which it's easy to feel immediately at home. The Studio apartment next to the main house displays the same sort of retro stylishness, with a galley kitchen, a main living area with table and chairs and a double bed and a mezzanine floor above with further sleeping space for two people. There's a wet room with a rainfall shower, and outside a private space with a table and chairs.

Wherever you decide to stay, you'll find Peter and Kim exceptional hosts, always around and happy to advise on the best way to spend your time here. Given the delights of the grounds, you may opt not to stray too far, making the most of the garden, tennis court, woodland walks and the lake, where you can swim or go boating, and where there's also a hut with a small bar and a barbecue with table and chairs. You are, however, a five-minute drive from Cotswold Water Parks, if you fancy more energetic watersports activities; there are also plentiful country walks, nature reserves and birdwatching spots nearby, while you are also close to two excellent country pubs that serve food all day. It's good horse-riding country, too, and they even have a couple of spaces to park your horsebox, while on rainy days the barn and studio are perfect spots for lazing around, with books and games, DVDs, Smart TVs and good wifi.

The Owner Says

We are a very rural site, with 35 acres of fields and flowers. We have no light pollution, making our site perfect for stargazing. We are perfect for small families and for a quiet couple's retreat.

Wandering the margins of our fields, you will see an unusual sight. Pottery. Hundreds, if not thousands, of randomly  assorted pieces of fired terracotta clay lying casually discarded  among the ditches and hedgerows. Roman in origin, some of the  larger pieces have clearly been worked by tools or human hands.  Some are stamped or scratched with graffiti. They are bits of pot, brick or roof tile, and comparable examples can be found in the

Roman section of the Corinium Museum in nearby Cirencester.   The sheer volume of ceramics concentrated in such a small  area suggests that here was once a production site of Romano  British pottery on a massive scale. The fact that so much material  has endured over so many centuries is a testament to that.

Dr Alan McWhir of the University of Leicester suggests that “no  other tile production site in Britain compares with Minety in  terms of the number of kilns”.

Guests that stay in the various stylishly  converted farm buildings tend agree, the setting is highly  conducive to wellness.
