Godney Arts House

UK England South West England Somerset

Old and new fuse seamlessly in this chic self-catering cottage nestled in the glorious Somerset Levels.

Godney Arts House is super stylish – an 18th-century Georgian farmhouse tucked away in the heart of Somerset, that’s been lovingly restored and renovated by owners Jane and Simon. It’s the kind of place where you walk from room to room thinking you'd like to take every piece of furniture home with you. You can, in fact, do exactly that – for a price of course.

Friends and family alike will enjoy a stay here – it's a relaxing countryside retreat with views to the Mendip Hills, where tradition and quirkiness blend together flawlessly. On the ground floor there's a fully equipped farmhouse kitchen, a dining room with copper table, a living room complete with wood-burner, and flagstone floors throughout. Simon's hugely varied artworks adorn the walls of the house, adding a special touch.

Upstairs, the three en-suite bedrooms are characterful and spacious, decorated with an eclectic mixture of items that have been collected over the years, each with its own interesting history. The first floor has two bedrooms – one is very large (two rooms knocked into one in fact) and double aspect, with both north- and south-facing windows, not to mention a roll top bath to luxuriate in, and gorgeous exposed copper piping. The other first-floor room can be made up as either a twin or superking. Up another level is the generously proportioned attic room, which is home to a kingsize and two single beds. Wherever you lay your head, you'll be greeted by French lining bedding. The added bonus? Electricity and heating are generated by solar panels, helping to make your stay eco-friendly.

The cottage is in a rather remote spot, with no light pollution, and all the better for it. Tranquility reigns, enveloping you in a warm hug. That being said, the property is not completely isolated – the local pub is just a two-minute walk away, with exceptionally good food, 16 beers on draft and 10 ciders on tap, whilst Ham Wall Nature Reserve, Wells and Glastonbury are all within 15 minutes' driving distance. Back at the house, there's a small south-facing cottage garden for you to enjoy the peace and quiet in. The care and attention to detail taken at Godney Arts House is outstanding – old and new fuse together with ease. It's truly a unique place to stay.
