Having opened its doors in 1960 as the Island Hotel, this has long been one of the most stylish spots to stay on the Scillies. With its own sailing school, a private beach and gardens, gourmet cuisine and unsurpassed views over Grimsby Sound, the hotel has recently been converted into the Sea Garden Cottages – they have contemporary one-bedroom apartments available on a self-catering or catered basis and also large Sea Garden Cottages (sleeping 2 – 10 people on a weekly basis, self-catering only). With the Ruin Beach Café constructed from old boat sheds, and an indoor pool and hot tub in a converted barn, there's a rustic simplicity to the luxurious vibe. However, such seaside beauty does come at a premium rate.

The Owner Says

Sitting right on the water’s edge at Old Grimsby on the eastern side of Tresco, the Sea Garden Cottages provide luxurious accommodation with breathtaking views across to Round Island and the Eastern Isles.

Completed in 2012 these beautiful modern cottages are available by the night or by the week and can sleep from two to ten people. Each cottage is splendidly appointed, with bespoke artwork, solid oak heated flooring, WiFi broadband and satellite television.

The Ruin Beach Café is close-by, and guests can enjoy the exclusive use of the tennis court, indoor swimming pool and gym on site.

Sleeping between six and ten people, the larger Sea Garden cottages are the perfect base for a holiday exploring Tresco and the wider Isles of Scilly with family or friends. Each property enjoys panoramic sea views and luxurious features including a wood burning stove, solid oak heated flooring, original artworks by some of Cornwall’s most renowned artists, WiFi broadband and satellite television.

The one bedroom Sea Garden Cottages offer flexible accommodation, with a fully-equipped kitchen for self catering or the option to enjoy breakfast at the nearby Ruin Beach Cafe. Each cottage has a first floor double bedroom with ensuite bathroom, and the bedrooms benefit from a balcony from which you can enjoy the far-reaching sea views. The ground floor comprises an airy open plan kitchen and sitting room with a sofa bed, making these properties suitable for those staying with a young child.

The local area

Tresco is somewhere else altogether...

It's a subtropical family-owned private island, just 28 miles from the coast of Cornwall but a world apart.

From its unspoilt beaches to its beautiful and varied landscape, Tresco is both a relaxing and fascinating place to stay. The island is equally suited to those who wish to take life easy as it is to those seeking discovery and adventure. There are plenty of diverse activities to enjoy, from fishing and sailing to fine dining and being pampered in our Island Spa - adjacent to your Flying Boat cottage.

Tresco is also home to the sub-tropical beauty of the world famous Abbey Garden; a perennial Kew without the glass, home to thousands of exotic plants from around the world flourishing right here on the Isles of Scilly.

Why not take to the seas for exploration and exhilaration or view the variety of interesting bird-life that can be found throughout the island? The clarity of light on Tresco and the island's land and seascapes are an inspiration to artists from far and wide, some of whose work is showcased in the Tresco Gallery.

Best local places to eat and drink

Tresco has three fantastic eateries to choose from, each with its own identity and speciality.

The first - The Flying Boat Bar & Bistro - is just moments from your front door, adjacent to the Flying Boat Cottages. This is waterfront dining at its best, with an emphasis on the finest local produce and a focus on the finest Scillonian seafood and succulent Tresco Beef.
The Ruin Beach Cafe, on the opposite side of the island (but still just a 20 minute stroll away) is where Tresco’s wonderfully laid back vibe meets modern, Mediterranean-inspired beachfront dining.  At the heart of the restaurant – and menu – is the wood-fired oven that produces delicious pizzas and roasts the succulent beef and fresh fish.
Finally, there's The New Inn, our friendly island pub - just a 5 minute stroll from your cottage. It's Tresco’s local, offering award-winning food and drink from our AA rosette kitchen.
