A country and coastal retreat for softies just outside Lyme Regis

Bang on the Dorset-Devon border, close to both the seaside town of Lyme Regis and the Devon town of Axminster, thecabin@greensleeves couldn't feel more secluded – situated at the bottom of a farm track with open fields on one side and a stream on the other. It's the creation of Steve Whiting and his family, who all live locally and who built this wooden retreat from scratch on a field opposite their house and surrounded by mature trees. They did a great job: it would be hard to find a more tranquil place to stay, yet you are only  3 miles from Lyme Regis and the coast, and a short hop from a main line railway station at Axminster (there are taxis or pick-ups can be arranged in advanced). There's loads to see and do nearby, and in the evening you can return to your secret cabin deep in the valley and sit on your verandah and gaze at the stars accompanied only by the hoots of hungry owls.

The cabin sleeps four people in comfort, so is perfect for a family or a group of friends looking for a country retreat and a place from which to explore the east Devon and Dorset coasts. You can choose between a ground floor bedroom, which has a kingsize double bed that can also serve as two singles, and the mezzanine floor which has another kingside double. The open-plan ground floor space is home to a well-appointed kitchen and living space, with a dining table and chairs, squishy sofas and a wood-burning stove, and a well-appointed modern bathroom with powerful shower. The kitchen has a hob and double oven, microwave, fridge and icebox and there's a washing machine in the bathroom. Outside theres a gas barbecue for al fresco suppers, while a Freeview TV, DAB radio with bluetooth and decent wifi are on hand in case the weather misbehaves. There's also a good pub, the Hunter's Lodge, within walking distance if you fancy eating out.

All things considered, it's a perfect spot – the Southwest Coast Path is just a couple of miles away, and there are numerous walks you can do from the property itself, scaling the slopes of the Axe and Marshwood valleys and visiting local Iron-Age forts . You can go fossil-hunting on the beach in nearby Charmouth, explore the Undercliff in Lyme Regis or walk the Jurassic Coast from West Bay; you can also do wonderful fishing trips, either in Lyme Regis or in West Bay).  And you won't go hungry either: the cabin is a stone's throw from both River Cottage HQ and their kitchen and deli in Axminster, and the Hix Oyster & Fish House in Lyme Regis.  It's a country and coastal retreat for softies - which is just how we like it!

Our very own cabin in the woods

I spent 5 wonderful days here with my partner for his birthday in October. The cabin was beautiful and situated in the most idyllic surroundings which was filled with wildlife such as rabbits and even a deer which was seen running through the gardens into the trees one morning. It has a little pond and stream close by. The cabin is very private and comes with parking. Nice little touches upon arrival i.e teabags, biscuits, fruit and crisps. Highly recommend this place for a relaxing retreat and hope to return in the future when the weather is a bit warmer and we can make use of the bbq and porch area more.

A Great week

We stayed a week in mid August 2021. We were hoping for somewhere quite and secluded - the kids can be a bit noisy! Greensleeves is very easy to find and surprisingly near to Lyme Regis. But equally its in a very peaceful and very beautiful spot. The cabin is very well appointed, very comfortable and generous in terms of space. The outdoor deck is also bigger than it appears in the photos. The cabin is very clean and well cared for. Good water pressure in the shower too! Kitchen well stocked with good quality pots, pans and crockery etc. The owner 'Steve' was very welcoming and helpful - just a great and easy week away.

A wonderfully secluded valley home, perfect for an escape. Well located for exploring too. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend especially if you want a woodland getaway.

Phenomenal family retreat in the woods - Highly recommended

We have just returned from an amazing week at the lovingly presented Cabin@Greensleeves set in a idillic forest location not that far from Lyme Regis and Axminster. The Cabin which was obviously built with great passion and love by Steve with some great design touches and has a beautiful luxurious country style which was only enhanced by the cream tea and flowers on arrival with homemade scones. The homegrown veg that Jean delivered to the door went down well too. We spent sunny days on the veranda BBQ-ing and our one wet day cozying up to the log burner, which my daughter was dying to use and Steve kindly supplied logs for despite it being August! The rope swing, river, wildlife and forest hide and seek was a hit with the kids also. Highly recommend!

The ideal hideaway!

We have just returned from a superb week staying in the Cabin@Greensleeves. A wonderful location Not far from Lyme Regis and an amazing cabin clearly built impressively with love by Steve. Back to nature with all the luxuries of nice beds, well equipped kitchen and bathroom and some lovely country living touches! The homemade scones, homegrown veg, pure silence apart from the wind and the kids rope swing just added another level Highly recommend!

Thank you so much Daniel. It was a joy having your family here and hearing the children being just children. The laughter was a tonic. Be safe and hope you find time to revisit some day.

Fantastic getaway

The cabin was a great place to get away from it all whilst still having a bit of luxury. The four of us had a fantastic time, falling asleep to owls hooting and waking to the dawn chorus, with comfy beds and a cosy woodburner to keep us warm. Can’t wait to go back in the summer!

Great stay in a relaxing environment

Immaculate cozy wooden house, impeccably decorated to the smallest detail in a very quiet spot within forest lands. Perfect for both forest walks and fossil hunting at the surrounding Dorset beaches. Very near to all local amenities and attractions but at the same time away from the crowds. Ideal for families. We loved our stay and the warm hospitality of Steve. We felt like being home away from home! We'll definitely visit again.
