Most people gasp when they first see Woolacombe Beach: it's one of the Southwest's finest, an award-winning, three-mile long expanse of golden sand that has long been a summer playground for swimmers, surfers, sunbathers and, well, just about anyone really. Come here once and we wouldn't blame you if you came back every year – and it just so happens we know just the place to stay if that's what you choose to do.

Byron's boutique beachside apartments are in many ways the ideal place to enjoy Woolacombe at its very best, ticking all the boxes you need for a perfect seaside holiday. They're 150m from the beach for a start, and come in a range of sizes, from one-bedroom flats to three-bedroom penthouses. They have a range of facilities, with underground parking, a heated indoor pool, gym, sauna, treatment room and games room (all useful options if the weather isn't playing ball ); and, importantly in such a dog-friendly destination, many of them accept pets too. Around half the apartments have sea views and most have furnished balconies or private patios to enjoy them from, while decor-wise, they are right up-to-date, furnished in a crisp contemporary style, with high spec, well-equipped kitchens, bright and spacious open-plan living/dining rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, good wifi throughout, at least one (Smart) TV with Freeview and a DVD player, washing machines and just about everything else you might require for a comfortable stay. There are lifts to the upper floor apartments and down to the underground car park; the ground floor flats have bike storage, while the penthouses are reached by their own private elevator and have an extra large roof terrace with unrestricted sea views. One other nice touch – each apartment has its own 'surf shed' so you can leave your stuff on the beach. Byron also has its own restaurant, Brundle's, on the ground floor, which is a bonus in a seaside village not exactly inundated with good places to eat. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and it's a nice place to hang out at any time of day.

Finally there's Woolacombe itself, where the beach provides reason enough for a stay: you can opt for the main beach closest to the apartments, or seek out the rocky cove of Barricane Beach to the right, which is sheltered and has a tremendous beach café serving Sri Lankan food; or Putsborough Beach, at the far end of Woolacombe's strand – which is similarly sheltered and also has a good beach café. Strike out further afield, to Croyde, just beyond, or further on to gorgeous sands at Saunton, with the dunes of Braunton Burrows behind; or climb the hill next door to Mortehoe, where are a couple of excellent local pubs and lovely circular walks to Morte Point. Take it from us, there aren't many better places for a beach holiday in the country: 'just 4 minutes from bed to beach!'
