The Little Barn
There's a certain feeling of being away-from-it-all that you only get from being on an island, even a large one like the Isle of Wight. But The Little Barn takes it to the next level: situated down in the southwestern corner of the Isle of Wight, in one of the most beautiful, unspoilt parts of the island, it's a very appealing, tiled holiday cottage equipped with everything you could possibly need for an island holiday. A homely place, light and extremely spacious downstairs, with lots of room for the kids to run riot, it has a large open-plan kitchen-diner, equipped with fridge-freezer, hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher, toaster and high chair, a wet room and utility room with washing machine. They have fast wifi, and the sitting room has a FreeSat flatscreen TV and DVD player, plus there's a large deck looking towards St Catherine’s Down – a key Isle of Wight landmark and the southernmost point of the Island. Upstairs, it sleeps from 2 to 4 people in a double and a twin bedroom (and they can accommodate a 5th person on a futon). For colder days and cosy evenings in, there's underfloor heating, powered by an eco-friendly ground-source heat pump.
The cottage also has parking for 2 cars – which is handy as you might not be getting in your car much while you're here. The friendly owners live in the nearby Main Barn, which shares the property's 2 acres of grounds, made up of landscaped gardens, meadow and wetland, ponds and streams where you can wander at will and often see all manner of bird- and wildlife – buzzards, kestrels, barn owls, woodpeckers, red squirrels, bats are regulars here. Above all, it is peaceful, rural and secluded place to stay, a mile or so from the village of Shorwell, close to the beaches of the west coast and with stunning sea views – ideal for families, a small group of friends or people in general who love walking and cycling. The sea is just a mile away on foot, there are numerous walks into the countryside nearby, and the night skies are clear and wonderful for star-gazing (they have a Dobsonian telescope for guests' use). Perfect, in fact, for that island idyll of having left it all behind.
The Owner Says
Our favourite spotWe fell in love with this area because of the beautiful views, privacy and quiet location. We rennovated The Little Barn to share the space with others. It is a great place to simply 'be', but also easy to get to all the amenities you might want. If you love the outdoors you will love it here, but we have made a great effort to make sure the cottage is an easy, comfortable and pleasant place to be when you decide to stay indoors (Or the weather decides for you!).
The local area
The genuine, friendly attitude of locals, traditional local shops, easy access to walks and cycle rides and unspoiled, empty beaches.
Best local places to eat and drink
We love The Cow restaurant and bar at Tapnell Farm for everything 'cow', but also the best fish and chips I have had on the Island. They also do great vegetarian food so don't be put off by the name. The Piano Cafe in Freshwater is a lovely place to sit and while away the time over a coffee and cake. The mobile WightWood Pizza van which trundles about to various locations in the summer. So good that you now have to book your pizza in advance! Thompsons restaurant in Newport is great for that extra special meal run by a Michelin starred chef. Welcoming staff and out of this world food! Finally The Taveners in Godshill a top class local pub with excellent food and wide selection of beers.
