Situated a few miles north of the popular market town of Kirkby Lonsdale, on the western side of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Old Kiln Cottage is a beautiful, two-bedroom country property. Ideal for either a couple or a family of four, it has been recently renovated from top to bottom and is deliciously rustic – perfectly reflecting its rural location yet with all the contemporary comforts that you need. It's an ideal location for a walking holiday, with the Yorkshire Dales on your doorstep and the legendary heights of the Lake District not much further afield.

Although the cottage has been restored, it has retained a lot of its most characterful features, with flagstone floors, beams and barn-style doors. Upstairs it has two bedrooms, both furnished with king-size beds, and a family bathroom, while downstairs there's a very well-equipped modern kitchen, with an oven, hob, fridge, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine.  It's all super-cosy, with central heating and super-fast wifi throughout. The comfortable living room has a gas log-burner stove and a TV with Freeview and Netflix, while outside there's a landscaped garden and patio areas with a dining table offering the opportunity for al fresco meals while enjoying the wonderful views over Middleton Fell to the north and Barbon Low and the High Fells to east.

However, one of the best things about Old Kiln Cottage is that there is so much to see and do nearby, including enough walks from your front door that you can leave your car keys in your pocket. The 'book town' of Sedbergh, just 8 miles to the north, is well placed for walks in the relatively unknown Howgill Fells, while the cottage's location in the sociable village of Barbon is also a huge plus, with a pub – the Barbon Inn – and the Church Mouse café-deli offering sustenance after long day's hikes. Kirkby Lonsdale is just 4 miles away, and is an attractive small town with plenty of facilities, while to the southeast there's Ingleton, with its waterfalls, walks on Ingleborough Fell and the popular attraction of White Scar Cave.  The owners Martyn and Sara live nearby and know the area very well so have lots of tips on the best pubs and restaurants – and of course the very best walks!

The Owner Says

'' We knew this was the project for us as soon as we pulled up outside Old Kiln Cottage. Despite the overgrown garden, shabby windows and tired paintwork, the cottage is set in the most idyllic location and we instantly knew that we wanted to bring it back to life! We love it more than ever now and hope our guests feel just as home here as we do.''

Great place to stay

Just stayed here for a three day short break. The cottage is really well equipped, to a very high standard. Lovely garden and ample parking and Sara and Martyn have thought of everything. Great Wifi, better than ours at home, washing machine, tumble drier dish washer and well equipped kitchen. Kirby lonsdale nice local town, scenery and countryside spectacular. We did visit the local pub for a drink, but settled back in the cottage for dinner, cosy fire and Netflix.

Beautiful peaceful escape, gorgeous cottage

We booked this cottage for a walking weekend as it was ideally placed between the Yorkshire dales and the lakes, it was perfect - cozy and well decorated with all the modern appliances you could need (including Netflix!). I even took photos as inspiration for decorating my house! The Barbon Inn is a two minute walk and did a beautiful roast dinner on Sunday. There was a peaceful friendly feel to the village with barbon beck just behind the cottage for walks. Kendal is close by as is Kirkby Lonsdale for a top up on supplies. Would absolutely recommend, we had a lovely time!
