A two-bedroom country cottage that's a perfect base for Weardale and the North Pennines.
Location Location Location.  We've said it before but there's nothing to beat a cottage in a terrific countryside location if you're looking to really get away from it all. And the great thing about the Old School House is that it feels rural and remote yet is extremely easy to reach. With two bedrooms and lots of space for four people  – either a family or a small group of friends – it's perfect if you're looking to explore Weardale and the North Pennines, with the odd trip to the ancient city of Durham thrown in for good measure.

The cottage actually dates back to the late-seventeenth century but is much changed since then – a bright and spacious one-storey cottage, with lovely countryside views and a wraparound garden with large pond. There's a comfortable sitting room with a wood-burner, Smart TV and DVD player, a large kitchen-diner equipped with electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge and freezer. Although it's really a spacious cottage for two (or a couple with a child), it has two bedrooms, one of which boasts a four-poster, and a family bathroom with bath and shower and also a washing machine and tumble dryer. There's also a conservatory that makes the most of the country views.

Above all the cottage is very conveniently located on the edge of the North Pennines AONB for multiple nearby attractions, from Hamsterley Forest just two miles away,  which is great for walking and cycling, to Barnard Castle where you can explore the spectacular High Force Waterfall. The cathedral city of Durham itself is also just 13 miles away, and you'd be crazy to come this close and not visit. All in all it's an ideal base for a surprising and very beautiful part of England – contemplate it from the garden on arrival  while enjoying a glass from your complimentary bottle of wine.
