Cider Mill Cottage

UK England West Midlands Worcestershire Worcester

  • Sleeps 2–3
  • Cosy Rural Retreat
A former cider mill converted to a delightful beamed cottage for two, amid some lovely Worcestershire countryside.

Just a few miles northwest of Worcester, on the edge of the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this old beamed cider mill offers snug and cosy accommodation for two, or for a couple with a toddler or young child. It's been beautifully converted, and offers the perfect base for exploring a hugely attractive part of England, with Worcester, Malvern and the delights of the relatively unexplored Teme Valley on your doorstep.

Situated down a bumpy farm lane, about a mile from the main road, the cottage is quite literally well off the beaten track and feels gloriously isolated and enjoys stupendous views over the surrounding countryside. It has a well-arranged open-plan living area, with a wood-burning stove, sofas, TV and DVD, and a small dining area, and a contemporary kitchen in which the original mill wheel (of the old cider press) has pride of place; the kitchen is ingeniously built around it. The kitchen is warmed by an Aga so you can really live out your country living fantasies – you are, after all, not far from the home of The Archers! Upstairs, there's a master bedroom with an antique double bed, along with a bright single room and a well-equipped modern bathroom, with more vintage pieces of furniture throughout. A welcome basket is provided on arrival, full of garden produce and homemade goodies.

Catherine, the owner, lives in the nearby main house, and is always on hand to advise on the best country walks or which pubs serve the best food – and she'll also let you use their lovely swimming pool if you ask nicely. At the very least you should take a stroll through her gorgeous garden and make the most of the view: the nearby Teme Valley is a hidden gem, boasting the quintessentially English countryside that is typical of this part of Worcestershire. There are lots of walks right from the doorstep, or you can follow part of the long-distance Worcestershire Way, which runs nearby on its route down to Malvern. Nearby sights include local composer Edward Elgar's birthplace, just outside Worcester, factory tours of the Morgan Motor Company in Malvern – and of course the cathedral city of Worcester itself. You might start off thinking about a lovely quiet weekend escape, but there's plenty to do and a full week suddenly seems rather attractive. Heartily recommended!

The Owner Says

Want to escape from it all ?  Cider Mill Cottage is a converted cider mill, with the mill stone still taking pride of place in the cottage. A wonderful bucolic retreat in the beautiful Teme Valley, and literally off the beaten track.   Cider Mill Cottage is a delightfully quirky mix of old and contemporary with the mill wheel taking centre stage in the open planned living area.

The sitting room offers the cosy welcome of exposed oak beams and Clearview wood burning stove, vintage dining area with log store and the kitchen which has the quintessential of all country cottages -  a beautiful AGA

The modern spiral staircase leads up to a gallery landing and two bedrooms and bathroom. The bedrooms are a mix of antique, vintage and modern fittings, and offer our guests comfortable and cosy accommodation. The main bedroom has a wonderful and comfortable antique double bed.  Feather and down duvets and pillows, and top quality linen for a perfect sleep.

Welcoming goodies on your arrival of bread, milk, cake, homemade preserves with fruit grown in the gardens and fresh eggs from our own chickens.  All you need to do is decide whether to venture outside to enjoy excellent walking routes through the wonderful countryside which start  straight from the doorstep, or to curl up with a book in front of the wood burning stove and enjoy the peace.  Listen to skylarks in the days and owls at night.

We are also dog friendly, and the area is perfect for exploring with your four legged companion.

The village of Clifton Upon Teme is 1 mile away and has a general store, a couple of pubs which serve food, and a church. A little further away is Martley ( 3 miles ) which has a post office, village shop and a car repair garage with  petrol station (where they serve you your fuel).
This is a fabulous and relatively unknown part of England, which boost fabulous scenery and is an excellent place to walk and explore.  There is plenty to see in the surrounding area with Ludlow, Worcester, Hereford and The Malvern Hills all close enough to visit.

Beautiful unique cottage, stunning gardens and house and the views were fantastic. Spent a lovely long weekend relaxing in the gardens, enjoying the total peace with evenings relaxing in front of the log fire. Would recommend to anyone who wants a peaceful and relaxing holiday. Good food in the local pubs and great walking. Catherine was very friendly and accommodated our every need. Dog friendly too!

A stunning location

I can't add much to what has already been said about the Cider Mill Cottage especially the “Absolutely marvelous find” comment. We were there for seven days at the end of March till the beginning of April and the walks around Worcestershire and Herefordshire were stunning with carpets of Primrose, Wood Anemone, Dog Violets and the occasional Bluebell - STUNNING. Out of five I would give our stay at Cider Mill Cottage a rating of SEVEN. The hares and two buzzards were an added bonus. Deep Joy.

Absolutely marvellous find

I’m lucky, insomuch that I always seem to find great dog friendly properties to rent, but this time I excelled myself. Cider Mill cottage is a superb place to stay and once you’ve wound your way down the twisty turning farm track, it is a great place to just chill out and relax. Very cosy and welcoming and the centrepiece of the kitchen area is the huge apple crushing mechanism, still completely intact and it looks like it could be used straight away. A lovely reminder of what the building was used for in times gone by. There was a lovely welcome pack, above and beyond what most places offer and we made full use of it. The apple gin was a real surprise. All of the rooms and furnishings are well appointed and everything is comfortable to a degree that you feel you have bought the items yourself. The log burner is great. A decent size that throws out a fantastic amount of heat, making the seating area a real toasty place to be. There was also a decent supply of logs and kindling. We were here for 3 nights, had a roaring fire each night and still left enough to last one more night. The grounds are lovely and in the Summer months, you can take advantage of the owners swimming pool. You also have a small al fresco dining area. There is a nice fully enclosed secure paddock that you can take your 4 legged friend around, off the lead, to run around to their hearts content. The walk into the village is very pleasant, crossing several fields including one that was full of very curious, heavily pregnant sheep. Our young Lab puppy was equally curious and took it all in very calmly. (He was obviously on a lead at all times.) Turn left at the main road junction. The village has one dog friendly pub, the Lion Inn and this has a good selection of beers and wines. You can eat in the bar area with your pup, without being frowned upon. The village is also quite a scenic place to walk around. If you turn right at the main road junction, this will take you to another pub. The New Inn. I can’t comment on this one as we did not visit it. The accommodation is so cosy and welcoming, you’re happy to spend a good chunk of time there. There was just the 2 of us and our dog staying for this break, but the accommodation is designed for 3 adults and there would be ample room. Could not recommend this place highly enough.
