57 Shore Rd East Wittering West Sussex PO20 8DY

Most day-trippers to the Witterings, near Chichester, are heading for West Wittering, with its gloriously undeveloped golden sand beechn But neighbouring East Wittering has a big draw too: the Samphire English Kitchen. This fab little restaurant is set back 50m or so from East Witterin'g's shingly beach, and, perhaps unsurprisingly given its seaside location, there’s plenty of local fish and seafood on the menu. You’ll get a sense of the place from the rustic exterior, with its reclaimed wooden tables and home-painted driftwood signs; and the snug interior is just as low-key. The menu changes daily, depending on what ingredients are available, but might feature seabass with a tomato, cockle and crab sauce, or mussels and chips, or confit duck leg. Fish, meat and veg are all locally sourced, with the chefs sometimes wandering down to The Fish Hut, just metres away at the top of the beach. The restaurant is no secret (it’s been in the Good Food Guide for a couple of years) but somehow it still feels like one: book ahead though, as it’s only small, and can get busy at weekends.
