Military Road East Wallhouses Northumberland NE18 0LL

For farmhouse goodness, a spear's throw from Hadrian's Wall, drive the 5 miles out of Corbridge to Vallum, whose tea room, ice cream parlour, farmgate shop, restaurant, smokery and kitchen garden pretty much have the tastes of Northumberland sewn up. It's a family-run farm venture, with great food available in the red-check and pine tearoom, from bumper breakfast to afternoon cakes. Ice cream comes from their own milk, the on-site Bywell Smokery is responsible for all manner of loveliness, bangers and salmon to chicken and game, and when the homebaked scones come out of the oven first thing in the morning there's generally already a queue waiting. A deck and picnic tables overlook the kitchen garden and paddock, and you're always to welcome to find an artisan breadmaker, wildflower florist or ice-cream maker to chat to. The shop's a thing of beauty too, while chef David Kennedy runs his restaurant on the site, sourcing most of the dishes either straight from Vallum or the local postcode area.
