Front Street Grosmont North Yorks YO22 5QE
Artist Chris Geall has a gallery and studio in the steam railway village of Grosmont, so you can arrive in style on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering – the station is just over the road. Anchoring the gallery is the easygoing Artisan Cafe, which is a lovely place to break the journey, with its rough-hewn, homespun feel – mix-and-match tables, stripped-wood floors, rugs, throws, cushions, and oodles of art. Everything is homemade and home-baked by café host and chef Jayne, and a lot of it is veggie – soups to casseroles, tapas dishes to Mediterranean salads. A recent visit saw us tucking into a paneer and aubergine curry with rice, naan bread, salad and pickles (for an astonishing £5.95), with a meaty steak and kidney pie and a brown lentil and veggie minestrone on offer too. The sandwich menu is cleverly conceived – basically, you can design your own, picking and mixing from around 40 ingredients (prawn mayo to peanut butter) and various breads listed on the board. Meanwhile, monthly 'Secret Supper Club' nights are based around a cuisine and offer friendly, communal gallery dining amid Chris Geall's panoramic oil paintings.
