Hidden away on a cobbled Dalston street, and with more the feel of a Berlin squat than an East London club, Passing Clouds is a truly experimental venue, with regular jam sessions fusing West African, reggae and jazz music. There are also Latin jams, and sessions by Movimientos, who play underground salsa, hop hop and reggaeton. It’s an idiosyncratic and diverse place, with a downstairs stage, bar and dancefloor, while upstairs there’s a relaxed bar and cosy lounge, decked out with cushions, sofas, parasols and ethnic fabrics. The venue steers away from self-conscious cool, and is quirkier and much more endearing than most Dalston clubs.
