Harrison's Rocks near Groombridge East Sussex

Harrison’s Rocks, an isolated sandstone outcrop surrounded by woodland on the Sussex-Kent border near Tunbridge Wells, is a bit of a honeypot for climbers from all over the southeast, with plenty of climbs at most levels of difficulty. The rocks are managed by the BMC (British Mountaineering Council) and access is open to all, so you can just pitch up and rope up if you know what you’re doing; if you’re a complete novice you can sign up to one of the beginners’ courses offered by excellent local outfit Nuts 4 Climbing, which runs courses here from spring through to autumn. The three-hour taster session (£55) starts off with some fun scrambling before moving on to roped rock climbs, or there are longer one-day and two-day courses available, as well as children’s and family courses; if you’re serious about taking up the sport, the two-day course should give you all the skills you need for going solo.
