UK Travel: A Coronavirus Update

The English Wine Centre

Alfriston Road Berwick East Sussex BN26 5QS

English wine is no longer a joke – in fact, the industry’s booming, and the southeast corner of England is home to a clutch of award-winning vineyards that are turning out wine (fizz in particular) that's more than a match for the more famous names across the Channel. Plenty of supermarkets now stock English wine, but much nicer than chucking a bottle in your trolley as you wander up the wine aisle is to stock up on a few bottles of England’s finest at The English Wine Centre, housed in a converted barn in the middle of the East Sussex countryside – just up the road, in fact, from the village of Alfriston where Rathfinny Estates is currently in the process of establishing what will eventually become one of the largest single-site vineyards in the whole of Europe (amazing, eh?). The English Wine Centre has over 100 English wines for sale, and generally has a few bottles out for tasting; if you want to buy local, look out for bottles from, amongst others, Nyetimber, Ridgeview, Bolney, Carr Taylor, Sedlescombe (England’s oldest organic vineyard) and Breaky Bottom. The Wine Centre also runs excellent tutored wine tasting sessions (including lunch) on the first Saturday of each month, and has a small restaurant.
