Kota Kai Bar Kitchen
Harbour Head Porthleven Cornwall TR13 9JY
With its historic harbour, sandy beach and cluster of shops and restaurants, Porthleven is worthy of breaking out of Falmouth to visit. When Jude and Jane opened Kota Kai in 2011, they far exceeded their brief of a casual family restaurant to add to what's on offer in the postcard-pretty fishing village. With a cocktail lounge, film nights and a varied menu spanning tapas to Thai, this funky bar and kitchen is more than just a place for families looking for excellent local food served in a laid-back ambience. The food – like the decor – is contemporary in its style, reflecting the chef's Maori and Chinese Malay roots, with everything from a Kiwi burger (topped with pineapple, cheese and beetroot) to Cornish crab linguine and Thai-style duck breast. You don't have to come in for a slap-up feast, simply sink into a sofa with a cocktail, coffee or smoothie. Foodie families will be in their element: not only do kids eat free (5pm–6pm) but there's a separate family room stacked with toys, bean bags and even a wooden skittle alley.
