'The simple things in life done well' is the motto of this rather special inn – and we reckon it's perfectly suited to this gastropub with rooms, situated on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It lives up to its billing in every way possible. There are eight very comfortable rooms above a restaurant that's one of the best in the region. It's also a proper pub, with all that implies, serving well-priced, well-kept local ales – a bit of a haven for local drinkers and a welcoming place for everyone else, with a roaring fire in winter. And dogs and children are very definitely welcomed.

The rooms are all different in size and style, but they all have big beds, Roberts Radios, homemade biscuits, fresh flowers and posh toiletries. There are no TVs, and they make a thing of this, so embrace the good old days and read a book. Breakfasts are delicious (scrambled eggs and smoked salmon if you prefer, local apple juice, homemade soda bread), and a good indicator of the quality of the dinner you'll enjoy – namely seasonally influenced dishes and ingredients from the Welsh borders, whether it's beef or lamb, local cheese, or herbs and veg picked from their own kitchen garden. No shortage of things to do during the day either, to work up that appetite, from a hard day's walking to book-browsing in Hay or just pottering around nearby Brecon, Abergavenny or Crickhowell.

No better place then for a Welsh country weekend away – and if you like the style, it's good to know that the owners use the same motto for the other hotels they run in Cornwall, the Gurnard's Head near Zennor and Old Coastguard in Mousehole.
