The Big Sleep
UK Wales Glamorgan Cardiff
Converted from a not very distinguished 1960s office block, the Big Sleep is premised on simplicity – though that’s not to say it lacks style, and in any case you certainly can't argue with the prices, which are kept very low. The grubby entrance aside, there are splashes of colour all over, from the reception and bar areas through to the 80 or so twin and double rooms. These come in two categories; budget and standard, though they’re all en-suite and have a flatscreen TV – standard rooms are just a touch more artfully decorated. Rooms can also be arranged to accommodate families. And in case you're wondering why the hotel seems to have a lot of pictures of John Malkovich, it's because he's one of the hotel's chief stakeholders and a great champion of Cardiff, apparently.

fantastic views from the top floor!
We had a room at the very top. The views were amazing and the kids really loved staying there- good value too so you need to book well in advance.
There was no windows that opened at all, giving it a slighly clautrophobic feel though.
