The Hotel du Vin chain appears to be unrivalled in its ability to breathe life into buildings without altering the architectural character – and the Birmingham branch of the firm is no different. Occupying a former eye hospital, the hotel has revived and updated a moribund edifice while retaining the best of its archetypal, enchanting Victorian red-brick facade, and the relative grandeur of the rooms and public spaces. The rooms themselves have high ceilings, deep bathtubs and vintage sinks that pay homage to the building's history, while the bistro and private dining areas are equally elegant, with the latter providing the more ornate setting. Completing the experience are the attentive staff who go some way to ensuring the hotel delivers a premium service.
