The word 'guesthouse' does Brooks a bit of a disservice. This independently owned 22-room hotel on the edge of Bath city centre is a slickly run establishment with an eye very firmly on its boutique credentials. The rooms are cleverly in tune with the Victorian building, yet cool and contemporary at the same time, with large fireplaces, jazzy wallpaper, curvy period furniture and florid rococo styling. All are well-equipped with high quality bed linen and goose down duvets, digital radios and iPod docking stations, flatscreen TVs and DVD players; there's free wifi throughout and bathrooms that have been handsomely refurbished in a modern style and kitted out with designer toiletries.

You can choose from smallish but great value 'standard' rooms with queen-size beds and larger 'superior' rooms with king-size beds, as well as a handful of family suites which can comfortably accommodate two adults and two children. Breakfast is delicious, with lots of alternatives on offer if you don't want their excellent Full English, like eggs Florentine, French toast and fresh fruit. There's also a downstairs honesty bar and lounge.
As for the location, it's on a busy road so the rooms at the back are quieter, but it's just a few minutes' walk from everything you might conceivably want to see in Bath. It's also worth knowing that they offer great midweek packages that include two-hour sessions at the excellent nearby Thermae Bath Spa – one of our favourite things to do in the city. The same people also have an excellent and somewhat unusual boutique B&B in nearby Bristol.
