The Griffin Inn

UK England South East England East Sussex

Great food, comfy rooms – and perhaps Sussex's best pub garden.

The Griffin Inn’s got a lot of things going for it, but it really comes into its own in summer when you can make the most of its gorgeous two-acre garden – contender for the loveliest pub garden in Sussex. Behind a secluded terrace there’s a large sloping lawn with beautiful views across the fields towards Sheffield Park, plenty of picnic tables, and enticing grassy banks for kids to roll down. Summer weekends see the barbecue fired up, with rows of Rye Bay lobsters lined up on ice ready for the coals, alongside wild sea bass, steaks, home-made burgers and superior Sussex bangers. Even without its garden the Griffin would be a gem. It’s in a gorgeous spot, deep in the Sussex countryside in the pretty village of Fletching, and has bags of charm – beams, panelled walls and cheerily blazing log fires in winter. There’s a daily-changing bar menu chalked up on the blackboard (first-come, first-served), and a separate menu in the more formal restaurant, both making the most of local ingredients: fish from Rye Bay, venison and game from local farmers, and vegetables from the Fletching market-garden. “Locally sourced” and “orgaGreat food, nic” might be the buzzwords on many a gastro pub’s menu these days, but the Griffin’s been doing it this way for years.

Open all year.
