Location, location, location: period splendour in a prime spot in the centre of Bath

If you’re going to do Bath, you may as well do it properly – and that means staying in the city’s iconic Royal Crescent. This sweeping arc of terraced Georgian townhouses is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Grade I listed. At its very centre, numbers 15 and 16 have been combined to form the Royal Crescent Hotel and Spa. It's an AA five red-star hotel that provides outstanding hospitality and service, and offers just what you might expect from such a grand address: valet car parking, a concierge service and an elegant restaurant and bar. But it also proffers some surprises, including an acre of gardens and a modern spa, plus family-friendly and even dog-friendly rooms.

The Royal Crescent has been the most desirable address in Bath since the 18th century, and the 45 rooms and suites at the hotel help to maintain that reputation. Step inside and the elegance and grandeur of the crescent’s facade is mirrored by the public spaces downstairs. The history is part of the attraction, but you won't find anything tired or old fashioned here. A recent renovation has brought a fresh elegance to the place that's carefully balanced with its many period features. There's the lobby with its open fire, the drawing room with its plush sofas, and there are high ceilings, chandeliers and large windows everywhere. Perhaps the star of the show is Montagu’s Mews restaurant and bar. It's mentioned in the Michelin Guide and has three AA Rosettes. Choose the tasting menu or opt for á la carte, and you can take your meal inside or out on the heated terrace, which opens to peaceful gardens beyond.

Guest rooms also blend contemporary comfort along with character features. At one end of the scale, Deluxe Rooms are perfect as a base for a couple who want a taste of this elegant address but intend to spend days out exploring the city. At the other end, Master Suites are big and grand enough to relax in all day. They each offer a seating area with sofas, views of the Royal Crescent lawn or gardens and a four-poster bed. Whichever bedroom or suite you opt for, you’ll find it’s been individually designed and tastefully decorated. All have at least a queen-size bed dressed with high-quality linens, plus fluffy towels, robes and Noble Island toiletries.

You’ll find the hotel’s spa and Bath House across the garden. There’s a pool, sauna, steam room and treatment rooms. Booking yourself in here, in the original spa town, seems an appropriate way to while away a few hours, but of course, there’s plenty more to explore in the city. See where the Romans relaxed at The Roman Bath House and find out about Bath’s most famous resident at the Jane Austen Centre. All of it is within walking distance of Bath’s most desirable address.
