There's something nice about staying in a classic coaching inn bang on the marketplace in a small English town, not least because it's traditionally the place where everything happens – a place to drink, a place to eat, and a place for those passing through to rest their heads and get a decent meal. The Black Boys in Aylsham fits this bill perfectly, a fine old pub and hotel which serves good hearty food in the downstairs pub and restaurant and has eight B&B rooms on the floor above. Guest accommodation consists of two family suites and six variously sized double rooms, including the large and lavish 'Nelson Suite' at the front, in which the great man is said to have danced on one of the occasions he passed through the town, which he did on numerous occasions.

All of the rooms have en-suite bathrooms, three of them with baths as well as showers, and those at the front (including Nelson's old dancefloor) have been refurbished in a crisp contemporary style similar to the rooms at the hotel's sister establishment, the Recruiting Sergeant in Horstead (they also own the excellent Buckinghamshire Arms right outside Blickling Hall, just a couple of miles up the road).The other rooms are comfortable too, if slightly more old-fashioned, but the front rooms are definitely the nicest, and have the added benefit of the view over the marketplace – Aylsham isn't the sort of place where (apart from the odd early morning farm truck) you need to worry about street noise. There's wifi throughout, and they are dog-friendly too.
