Acquired less than a decade ago by the folks behind nearby Calcot Manor, this magnificent manor house has been transformed into a stylish and luxurious country house hotel, nestled into one of the South Cotswolds' most delightful small towns. Situated midway between Stroud and Gloucester, its 17 bedrooms have all been individually designed, and range from smaller rooms up in the eaves of the house, through to larger rooms in the Garden and Chapel wings right up to large rooms with roll-top baths and finally the full-blown 'George's' suite, complete with four-poster bed and private balcony. Whichever you plump for, all are airy, contemporary and spacious, and excellently equipped with ultra-comfy beds, mini fridges with fresh milk and water, cheffy treats and departure gifts, and bathrooms with powerful modern showers, luxurious 100 Acres bath products and fluffy robes – some also have freestanding baths. They're dog-welcoming, too.

Food is taken seriously at the Painswick, and the elegant yet contemporary ground-floor restaurant features an ever-evolving menu of well-priced and seasonal cuisine with a twist, spanning breakfast, afternoon tea and grazing boards from noon onwards, lunch, and two options for dinner – à la carte and tasting. There are also vegetarian and vegan menus on offer and they do a fab afternoon tea in one of two very comfortable lounges.

If we're honest, it's difficult to leave what is a very comfortable place to just hang about and do not very much at all, but if you do manage to drag yourself away, the charming town of Painswick is worth a look (and hosts a popular Art-Couture festival every summer), and Gloucester and Cheltenham are both within striking distance. What else? Painswick's curious and unique Rococo Garden is close by – ask the hotel for a guest pass – and the friendly team can organise various activities, including a tour and tasting at Woodchester Valley Vineyard. The property has impressive views down to the Slad Valley, where there are ample walking opportunities. Indeed, it's situated midpoint for the Cotswold Way, with plenty of trails to explore – again, the staff can provide recommendations and a map (and, on wet days, a pair of complimentary wellies and a rain jacket). All in all, the Painswick is a fabulous place to stay, in a terrific location, and you'd be mad not to give it a try. It's worth knowing too that the excellent Lord Crewe Arms in far-off Northumberland is another member of the hotel's family.
