Hawkshead has three or four old inns, all offering rooms and food, and the Sun Boutique and Lounge is the pick of the bunch since it added a dollop of modern flair to its 17th-century interior. They’ve kept the exposed stone, oak beams, open fires and old panelling – and there’s a vintage bump-your-head feel as you make your way around upstairs – but there are designer fabrics and locally made furniture in the rooms (and an impressive four-poster bed in one), and a contemporary look to the bar, where decently priced meals are served. The Sun Boutique and Lounge is surrounded by walking tracks and cycling routes. It is just moments away from the shores of Esthwaite Water and only 10 minutes drive to Ambleside.
