It’s unusual for us to recommend a Cornwall hotel
that’s not by the sea, but the Alverton is not only county capital Truro’s most comfortable place to stay by far,
but also a very handy, and great
value for money base for exploring the rest of Cornwall. This is especially so
out out of season, when the rain-and wind-thrashed coast and moors can lose
some of their Poldarkian allure. The comforts of a small city can be just the
ticket after a day battling the elements.
The Alverton began life as a Victorian-Gothic manor house belonging to a local banker – until he went bankrupt in 1874, following the collapse of the Cornish tin mining industry. It was later occupied by nuns who put local unwed mothers and prostitutes to work in their laundry. The neo-Gothic chapel, built in for the nuns by the same architect as Truro cathedral makes the Alverton a fabulous venue for a party or a wedding. It became a hotel in 1984 and is nowadays part of a small Cornish hotel group which also owns the Greenbank in Falmouth. We reckon it's the best place to stay in the Cornish capital, especially since the opening of its new Courtyard: 14 brand new rooms, painted in Farrow and Ball heritage grey, with bespoke Ralph Lauren textiles and magnificent bathrooms. All have fast free wifi and flatscreen TVs with Freeview, and the the two Junior Suites come with a silver or copper burnished rolltop bath-tub in the bedroom. Best of all, the Courtyard is set apart from the main building, ensuring peace and quiet for occupants while parties are in full swing. There's also a relaxed brasserie-restaurant that serves a delectable Modern British menu using locally sourced ingredients, with a pleasant terrace overlooking well-tended private gardens.

The Alverton Hotel is located around 5 minutes from Truro train station and bus station. If arriving by car, from the A30 take the exit for the A39 from the Carland Cross roundabout. Continue on the A39 and then turn right onto Tregolls Road. At the roundabout take the 5th exit and stay on Tregolls Road, turn left at The Alverton Hotel sign and make your way up the driveway to the hotel car park.
