The folk behind this hotel cut their teeth on the excellent Gurnard's Head near Zennor and the two places have plenty in common, not least a glorious scenic location, great food and a determinedly laid-back vibe that is infectious. Situated in the picturesque seaside village of Mousehole, near Penzance, the Old Coastguard is a supremely relaxing place to stay, with fourteen comfy guest rooms, all of which have some sort of view over the sea. The same group's third hotel, the excellent Felin Fach Griffin, is also well worth a visit if you're in that part of the world.
Downstairs too the laid-back atmosphere of the hotel is evident throughout: rows of sofas look seaward, children and dogs get a hearty welcome, and there's often live music in the restaurant alongside Sunday lunch. As with its sister hotel, the emphasis throughout is on comfort, good food and relaxation, with big comfy beds in spacious rooms equipped with Roberts Radios and posh toiletries, high-quality tea and coffee, and lots of books to browse. Some rooms have balconies, and most have baths, but all are that little bit different. Whichever you choose, you'll be so cosy you may not want to leave, but luckily there's plenty to tempt you downstairs, not least the hotel's lovely gardens, which stretch all the way down to the sea, a wood-panelled bar, and their first-rate restaurant.
As for Mousehole itself, it's an archetypal Cornish harbour village, albeit with a contemporary patina of cafés, restaurants and galleries. Beyond, you can take to the coastal path – St Michael's Mount and the Lizard Peninsula are on your doorstep; take in a performance at the nearby Minack theatre; or just go to the beach – in which case you'll be delighted to be fairly close to wonderful Sennen Cove, which is a grand place for both lounging and more high-adrenaline activities like surfing.

Take the M5 or A303 to Exeter and the A30 for Okehampton. Continue on the A30 all the way to Penzance. Once at the Tesco roundabout follow the A30 and signs for Land's End. After 3 more roundabouts on the Penzance bypass (A30), take the next left for Newlyn (B3315). In Newlyn, turn right (effectively going straight on) following the signs for Mousehole – the hotel is on the left on entering the village.
